New CD Review - Visions of Victoria
"Digital blips are sprinkled over moody acoustic strumming that builds up to mellow, introspective indie pop in tentative alliance with a drum machine. The more upbeat early-album moments suggest an unfinished version of Pulsars, while the up-front vocals and interesting multi-tracking lend a Housemartins vibe." "Zoo’s music can be described as a union of experimental rock and trip hop – a strong balance between organic and natural elements, and electronic quirks. The band has proved that their beats and instrumentals are the authority, and the vocals, a great asset." "But the angriest are still lurking beneath the surface, quietly making a scene in Hong Kong’s underground venues. Kolor’s “Get So High” addresses the compromises Hong Kong makes to achieve its status as a international financial centre, from the sky-high rents to villagers forced to make way for the building of new railways – issues that has the echo of the current one of NENT. Qiu Hong 秋紅’s song “7.1” repeatedly screams “freedom!” and emphasizes the number 500,000 – the estimated number of people who showed up for the protests in 2003 against the passing of Article 23." We reviewed the New Delhi-grinders ‘Fuzzculture’ back in May here. Their powerful EP, while certainly making an impression, offered little hope for future substance, the common theme of scraping noise and bass-heavy riffs offering little breathing space. With the full album now at hand, it will be interesting to see how the group, self-described as “somewhere between intense electronica and industrial music”, attempt to reach for those needed moments of respite amid the relentless cyber thrashing of the initial tracks. FAD can be summed up in four words: British, faddish, alternative and naïve. Mostly influenced by Brit rock but also incorporating many elements of other genres, their self-titled album was released this year. Their distinctively Britrock-style vocals and guitar riffs are sure to turn the venue into a dance floor for the night. See you at Backstage on 9th August, and don’t forget to grab your tickets at ticketflap!立刻到 ticketflap 購票,一同在8月9日於Backstage隨著Fad的音樂起舞吧!

“The Haunted” starts things off in typical style. Big Daddy ‘Joey Jones’ Hastings lays down a jaunty, rockabilly-style beat with deftness and precision, while Ziad ‘Tango Pants’ Samman provides the cowboy drawl and snarling, garage-quality guitar and Jasmine ‘Popcorn Shrimp’ Robertson hangs out on the root note and emits delicate ooh-oohs in the chorus. "If you’re looking for categories, Oh! Nullah is essentially punk prog rock. It’s interesting, complex and creative, but unclear and uncompromising vocals combined with a lack of variety in dynamic makes it a difficult task to judge the mood and message of individual songs. Very probably an acquired taste, but it could well be worth acquiring. And if the musicians on this record could reproduce it live, it would definitely be worth seeing. “Go Home” is about the monotony of everyday life – going to work, eating, getting off work, going home alone. Does that sound familiar to you? Summer Romance 夏日浪漫 writes simple melodies and tongue-in-cheek lyrics that tell stories about life, love and Hong Kong. While some songs will make you laugh out loud as you hear the lyrics, some will really hit home and leave you feeling strangely bittersweet.

Grab tickets via http://summerserenade.ticketflap.com/, and join us at Backstage on 9th August to experience the bittersweet simplicity of Summer Romance’s music for yourself! 立刻到 http://summerserenade.ticketflap.com/ 購票,在8月9日於Backstage和我們一起親身感受Summer Romance 夏日浪漫苦樂參半的音樂吧!

"We have a lot of friends who support us, who cannot be described as groupies or fans. We are not handsome, but we do have a funny side. We hope we can build up more of an audience and make friends during the trip, so that people in Canada will pay attention to us—a local Hong Kong band." "The album begins with Inside, which has an amazingly impressionable introduction, starting with a grand, ascending buildup that ‘drops’ into thick piano chords played in staccato, which really helps in giving the song it’s ‘stompy’ feel. This is a recurring theme within the album, and I’m tempted to say it’s what gives The Bollands their unique dance-inducing folk sound."
